Dormant Series #42
The Dormant series is the result of a slow, deliberate process using plaster, ground lava stone collected on walks, ink, and calligraphy paper. I apply this mixture by hand onto canvas, building each surface layer by layer. As the medium dries, using fingers, volcanic stones, and heat to sculpt, distress, and texture the surface. There is labour and patience in every stage. The works are not rushed; they are coaxed into form over time. The slow drying allows deep fissures to emerge. These cracks reflect geological and emotional terrain. They are not accidental. Each is shaped through repeated intervention and observation, forming a dialogue between Rachel and the material. Within this tension between control and surrender, the work finds its voice.
Plasters, basalt, sumi inks, rice paper, carbon and wax on canvas.
